You’ve played it a hundred times.

A little run of notes your fingers found on their own. It sounds great. But you couldn’t say what scale it comes from, so you can’t take it anywhere new.

That’s the gap Scale Finder closes.

Tap in the notes you know. Two, three, five, whatever you’ve got. The app filters 1,860 scales down to the handful that contain every one of them, then shows each one on the fretboard with the chords that belong to it.

Your lick stops being a dead end. It becomes a doorway.

What’s inside

Four things every guitarist needs to know about a scale

1. Which scale you’re playing

Filter by the notes you know and the list narrows instantly. Add a scale type (major, minor, pentatonic) to narrow it further. No theory degree required, just your ears and your fingers.

C, E, G and B selected

2. Every scale, in every key

1,860 scales: 110 scale types in every key. The everyday ones (major, minor, the pentatonics, blues and the modes) sit next to harmonic and melodic minor, bebop, Hirajoshi, Byzantine, Hungarian minor and dozens more. When a song needs a colour you’ve never used, it’s in there.

D Dorian ›NOTESD E F G A B C
E harmonic minor ›NOTESE F♯ G A B C D♯

3. The chords that belong together

Each scale comes with the chords built from its own notes, drawn as chord diagrams you can play straight away, so you can see at a glance why C, Dm, Em, F, G and Am work together, and write progressions that sound right the first time.

4. Where to put your fingers

Every scale is drawn on the fretboard in sections across the neck, from the open strings to the 12th fret, with the root picked out so you always know where home is.

Questions

What does Guitar Scale Finder do?

It is an iPhone and iPad app for guitarists. Tap in a few notes you know and it filters 1,860 scales down to the ones that contain them. For every scale it shows the notes, the chords that belong to it, and where to play it on the fretboard.

How do I find a scale from a few notes?

Open the filter, tap the notes you can hear or play, and the list narrows to scales that contain every one of them. The more notes you add, the shorter the list. You can also filter by scale type, such as major, minor or pentatonic.

How many scales are in the app?

1,860: every scale type in the library (from major, minor and the pentatonics to the modes, harmonic and melodic minor, bebop, Hirajoshi, Byzantine and more) in every key.

What does the app show for each scale?

Three things: the notes of the scale, the chords of the scale drawn as chord diagrams (the triad built on each degree), and the scale on the fretboard in standard tuning, shown in sections across the neck from the open strings to the 12th fret.

How much does it cost?

The app is free to download and starts with a free trial. After the trial it is a yearly subscription; the App Store shows the exact price for your country before you confirm. Cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends in Settings › Apple ID › Subscriptions and you won’t be charged.

Do I need to read music?

No. Everything is shown as note names and dots on a fretboard, the same way guitarists already think.
